They say “go big or go home,” and Penarth Operatic and Dramatic Society has clearly chosen the former—then added a few extra layers of green for good measure. Their latest production of Shrek The Musical is a rollicking, rib-tickling romp that transforms the stage into a fairy tale frenzy, complete with a cast of characters so vast, even the Brothers Grimm would be impressed.
From the moment the curtain rises, the audience is whisked away, where over 100 beloved fairy tale characters make appearances. The ensemble’s quick-change artistry is nothing short of magical; one might suspect a fairy godmother is lurking backstage, wand in hand, orchestrating the seamless transitions.

While the cast delivers performances of remarkable calibre, with fantastic ensemble from seasoned actors to the talented young Poddies; Leading the charge is David Millard as Shrek, whose narration sets the tone for the evening. His portrayal captures the ogre’s gruff exterior and tender heart, guiding the audience through a journey filled with laughter and love. By his side is Cloe Welsh as his trusted steed, Donkey, delivering the rapid-fire wit and boundless energy that fans of the original film will recognize and adore.
While no production is without its hiccups, the dedication and enthusiasm of this local dramatic group shine through every scene. The set design cleverly utilises space and backdrops to transport viewers from swampy bogs to towering castles, and the costumes are a visual feast— each more whimsical than the last.

Special mention must be made of the show’s musical numbers. From the toe-tapping “I’m a Believer” finale that had the audience dancing in their seats to the heartfelt solos that reveal the characters’ inner depths, the soundtrack is both familiar and fresh.
In conclusion, Penarth Operatic and Dramatic Society’s Shrek The Musical is a delightful evening of entertainment that proves community theatre can deliver big laughs and even bigger hearts. It’s a family-friendly extravaganza that reminds us all that beauty is in the eye of the ogre.
