Review: Carys Eleri - Tonguing at the Cabaret Club 👅👅👅
credit: Jak Bjornstrom
From the moment Carys Eleri stepped onto the stage, Tonguing was an electrifying whirlwind of music, comedy, chaos, and sheer theatrical brilliance. Equal parts madcap science lecture and high-energy musical escapade, this one-woman tour de force was a masterclass in connection—both cerebral and emotional.
Eleri has the rare ability to make neuroscience hilarious, seamlessly weaving complex ideas about human interaction with an anarchic blend of song, satire, and multimedia mischief. One moment, she’s explaining the biochemical effects of conversation with the earnest charm of a rogue scientist; the next, she’s belting out an absurdly catchy tune, possibly accompanied by medieval flutes or belting operatic tunes (because why not?).
“Unusual, unexpected, and utterly unmissable—Tonguing is nothing short of genius.”
The production revels in its unpredictability, treating audiences to ridiculous animations, laugh-out-loud musical interludes, and genuinely thought-provoking observations about our collective dependence on digital spaces. The internet might have rewired our brains, but Eleri passionately makes the case for real, face-to-face conversation—the art of which she executes flawlessly throughout the show.
Every joke lands with precision. Every song is a hilarious curveball. Every tangent somehow loops back to a greater truth and overall theme. By the time she wrapped up her riotous call to "Get talking, get tonguing," the audience was utterly enchanted, buzzing with the kind of energy that only a truly sensational performance can ignite.
Unusual, unexpected, and utterly unmissable—Tonguing is nothing short of genius. Carys Eleri has created something special: a show that doesn’t just entertain, but actively reminds us why human connection is so vital. This is not one to be missed.
Tonguing is at CABARET at Wales Millennium Centre from 8 – 16 May, so be quick, get your tickets here! and enjoy and good brain licking!
