CARMARTHENSHIRE, WALES — Gofod, the new gallery and events space at Wright’s in Llanarthne, opens its latest exhibition this Thursday, 22 October.
‘Root & Tide’ brings together paintings by Carmarthenshire artists Matthew O’Sullivan and Steffan Ebsworth, alongside ceramics by Matthew.
Their work beautifully captures the atmosphere of West Wales’ woodlands, coastlines and open spaces. It is their first joint exhibition.
The exhibition runs until Sunday 22 November. Admission is free.
Celebration with Live Music
The artists will host an evening of celebration on Friday 6 November from 7pm, with live music from their band, Rum Shunk. Entry is free.
Megan Evans, curator of gofod, said:
“We’re excited to host these two local artists, who are also art teacher colleagues, for their first joint exhibition. Their work taps into our wonderful surroundings here in Carmarthenshire and continues to build Gofod as a platform for local talent.”
The Artists
Matthew O’Sullivan is a colourist landscape painter whose work draws on the expressive traditions of Fauvism. Rather than reproducing the landscape realistically, he responds to it through colour, tone and atmosphere, using heightened and often unexpected colour to convey a sense of place. Much of his inspiration comes from the woodland around his home in Golden Grove, in the Towy Valley.
Steffan Ebsworth has always had an urge to create, dividing his spare time between making artwork and writing and performing music. He works mainly in mixed media and is drawn to the Welsh coast and open spaces, where he spends time in its ever-changing and often strongly contrasting weather. His expressive, experimental pieces are often made on location. They are semi-abstract, gritty, multilayered and tactile, and vary greatly in scale.
Next Workshop
Gofod will also host Ffion of Hael Natural Colour this Sunday 25 October for the next creative workshop. Attendees will have the opportunity to dye a silk bandana or scarf using locally grown flowers and plants. Ffion will guide participants through bundle dyeing, a steam process that leaves beautiful imprints and patterns on fabric. After experimenting with small tester pieces, each participant dyes their own piece, with coffee and cake from Wright’s included. Places are limited and tickets can be booked online.
About Gofod
Gofod (Welsh for “space”) expands Wright’s existing shop and café with a programme of exhibitions, workshops and creative events curated by Megan Evans. It celebrates local talent and community. Recent events have included bouquet-making workshops with Blodau Caredig and a live monologue performance by actor Russell Gomer.
The gallery also sits alongside CoffiWright’s, a new venture offering takeaway Coaltown coffee, tea, cakes and savoury snacks. It is an ideal stop for visitors to the exhibition and for those walking, running or cycling the new Tywi Valley Path.
