Bold, Aerial and Unapologetically Personal: ‘Foreigner in My Body’ Tours Wales This Summer

A powerful new solo show blending aerial circus, theatre and personal storytelling is set to tour Wales this summer, as Sara Hartel brings Foreigner in My Body to audiences across the country.

Visiting five venues from June, this striking production offers something a little different—combining movement, humour and raw honesty to explore identity, belonging and lived experience in a way that’s both thought-provoking and entertaining.

A story told in the air and on the ground

At its heart, Foreigner in My Body is a deeply personal piece. Drawing on Sara’s experiences as a trans person and migrant to Wales, the show uses a mix of aerial circus and theatre to create a unique and immersive performance style.

But while the subject matter is meaningful, the tone is far from heavy. With a playful, tongue-in-cheek approach, the show invites audiences to engage with complex themes through moments of joy, wit and connection.

Accessibility at its core

One of the standout elements of the production is its commitment to accessibility. Integrated captions and audio description are built into the performance itself—not added on—making the show inherently inclusive for blind, partially sighted, and D/deaf audiences.

It’s a thoughtful approach that ensures more people can experience the work fully, without barriers.

A journey across Wales

The tour will travel to venues across the country, opening at Barry Memorial Hall on Friday 12 June, before heading to:

  • Small World Theatre

  • Ffwrnes Theatre

  • Citrus Arts

  • Torch Theatre

Each stop offers audiences aged 13+ the chance to experience this bold and original piece up close.

An artist pushing boundaries

Originally from Germany and now based in Wales, Sara Hartel has built a reputation for creating innovative, genre-blending work. Previous projects have seen them mix gaming with live performance and challenge audiences in unexpected ways.

With Foreigner in My Body, they continue to push artistic boundaries—working alongside composer Frances Bolley and movement artist Eddie Ladd to create a piece that feels both intimate and expansive.

A timely and important voice

The show arrives at a moment when conversations around identity, migration and belonging feel more urgent than ever. Rather than focusing solely on struggle, Sara’s work centres joy and resilience—offering a perspective that is both refreshing and necessary.

Supported by Arts Council of Wales, the tour highlights the importance of funding work that amplifies diverse voices and creates space for new stories to be told.
