Wythnos Yng Nghymru Fydd comes to The Sherman
A bold new reimagining of Islwyn Ffowc Elis’s classic Welsh novel asks audiences to consider the future we are creating today
A classic Welsh novel is being brought into the present with a bold new production of Wythnos Yng Nghymru Fydd, coming to The Sherman in Cardiff on 29 October at 7.30pm.
Adapted by Mared Llywelyn and directed by Gethin Evans, this contemporary reimagining of Islwyn Ffowc Elis’s much-loved novel blends romance, speculative thriller and political drama to explore questions around Welsh identity, language, community and the future of Wales.
At the centre of the story is Ifan, a man who drinks hard, laughs loud and tries not to look back. He keeps most people at arm’s length, but there is one person he cannot quite escape: Mair.
As global politics collides with rural North Wales, an unexpected experiment sends Ifan into the future. Not once, but twice.
In one possible future, Wales is a country filled with freedom, hope and possibility. In the other, language, borders and community have been stripped away. In both futures, Ifan finds Mair, forcing him to confront the choices that have brought him there.
The production takes the ideas at the heart of Elis’s original novel and gives them a fresh contemporary perspective, inviting audiences to think about the Wales we live in now and the choices that could shape the country we leave behind.
Rather than simply looking backwards at a classic piece of Welsh literature, Wythnos Yng Nghymru Fydd asks a very current question: what kind of future are we creating today?
With its combination of love story, political reckoning and speculative storytelling, the production promises an engaging and thought-provoking night at the theatre, while continuing the conversation around Wales’s language, culture and identity.
The performance will be captioned in both Welsh and English, making the production accessible to a wider audience.
Wythnos Yng Nghymru Fydd is suitable for audiences aged 14+.
The production is supported by Galeri Caernarfon and the Arts Council of Wales with funding from The National Lottery.
