Gareth David Lloyd brings ‘After Agincourt’ to Cardiff Stage

Following a successful mini tour of London and an acclaimed run at Brighton Fringe Torchwood’s Gareth David Lloyd brings Peter Mottley’s historical drama After Agincourt home to Cardiff. 

Marking 611 years since the 1415 English Invasion of France, the audience is invited into the Boars Head Tavern where Shakespeare’s braggart soldier Pistol, drunk and haunted by ghosts of his past, regales fellow punters with a witty, harrowing and historically accurate account of the campaign of bloody battles, endless sieges and wrongful slaughter. 

Originally performed by Bob Hoskins on BBC Radio 3, the play uses Shakepeare’s Henry V as a framework to tell the story through the eyes of the common soldiers. Written in vivid modern vernacular, it deftly explores themes of class, PTSD, brotherhood and the real human cost of war. Underscoring the narrative is Peter Mottley’s meticulous historical research, which serves to sharpen the details of the period and expose grim realities often played down in mainstream interpretations. The result is an enlightening, highly emotional, and captivating drama.
