Script Club Cardiff & Volcano Theatre Unite for a Sold‑Out Night of New Writing in Swansea

Script Club Cardiff and Volcano Theatre brought the energy of grassroots creativity to Swansea on Wednesday 17 June, joining forces for a sold‑out celebration of new writing at Volcano Theatre. The one‑night‑only event showcased six brand‑new short plays by local writers — each staged after just a few hours of rehearsal earlier that day, in true scratch‑night spirit.

A Special Edition of Volcano’s Monthly Scratch Night

The evening marked a special collaboration between Volcano Theatre’s established scratch platform and Script Club Cardiff, a growing community for emerging and early‑career writers. Script Club runs regular coworking sessions, New Writing Nights and Q&As with industry professionals, offering a vital creative hub for writers across South Wales.

This partnership was sparked earlier in the year when Pearl Andrews‑Horrigan of Script Club Cardiff hosted a panel of female theatremakers at Volcano, organised by Creative Swansea — a conversation that planted the seeds for this joint venture.

Six New Plays, One Electrifying Night

The programme featured six short plays, each directed and performed by a rotating ensemble of local artists:

  • A Gay Guy Gets a Haircut by Corey Terrett, directed by Charlie McCollom‑Cartwright

  • Letting Go by Ciaran Fitzgerald, directed by Jacob Ethan Tanner

  • Alan by Maya Ibbotson, directed by William Vandyck

  • If ToMARROW Ever Comes by Sophie Judd, directed by Jacob Ethan Tanner

  • Painting A Wall by Luke Horton, directed by William Vandyck

  • Sharing Is Caring by Frankie Williams, directed by Charlie McCollom‑Cartwright

The ensemble cast — Bea Carpio, Sam Dinnage, Emily Farley, Hannah Green, Georgina Housby, Hannah Lloyd, Thomas Lloyd Rees and Cai Roberts — brought each script to life with bold choices, quick‑fire chemistry and the kind of creative risk‑taking that scratch theatre thrives on.

The night was produced by Hannah Jones and Pearl Andrews‑Horrigan, whose combined vision and coordination ensured the event’s smooth, high‑energy delivery.

A Growing Hub for New Writing in Wales

With a packed audience and a palpable sense of community, the event highlighted the appetite for new writing platforms in South Wales — and the power of collaboration between Cardiff and Swansea’s creative scenes.
