Radio Platfform Marks a Decade of Youth‑Led Creativity with Free Anniversary Event at the WMC

Radio Platfform — the youth‑run broadcasting powerhouse tucked inside the Wales Millennium Centre — is turning ten, and they’re celebrating the only way they know how: loudly, proudly, and with the next generation of Welsh creatives front and centre.

On Saturday 30 May, the station will host a free public event in the WMC’s Glanfa foyer from 12pm–4pm, kicking off a summer‑long celebration of the young people who have shaped, steered, and sound‑tracked the project since its first broadcast back in 2016.

A Decade of Giving Young People the Mic

Founded at the Festival of Voice (now Llais), Radio Platfform began as a grassroots experiment: what happens when you hand the keys to a radio station to young people aged 11–25 and let them run it entirely themselves?

Ten years later, the answer is clear — you get one of Wales’ most exciting creative training hubs.

From its home at the WMC and its sister studio at The Factory, Porth, the station has become a launchpad for emerging talent across broadcasting, music, digital media and live production. Its youth‑led model has helped hundreds of young creatives build confidence, technical skills and industry‑ready portfolios.

Along the way, it’s picked up serious recognition too, including Silver for Community Station of the Year at the 2024 ARIAs.

Alumni Lighting Up the Industry

Radio Platfform’s impact is perhaps best measured by the careers it has helped spark.

Among its alumni:

  • Molly Palmer — now a presenter with her own show on BBC Wales

  • Dylan Clarke — producer at BBC Wales

  • Katie Hill — producer at Overcoat Media

  • Agathe Dijoud — now working with The Audio Academy

And returning for the anniversary is Bablu Shikdar, who began his journey at Radio Platfform and will become the first Welsh presenter to host on BBC Asian Network Represents this June.

“Platfform creates space for young people to be creative, take risks and feel heard — and that can genuinely change lives,” Bablu says.

What’s Happening on Saturday

The anniversary event promises a mix of nostalgia, creativity and hands‑on discovery — perfect for aspiring broadcasters, curious teens, or anyone who loves seeing Wales’ creative scene in full flow.

Event Highlights

  • Live DJ Takeover — past and present presenters spinning throughout the afternoon

  • Studio Experience Sessions — bookable 30‑minute slots using professional broadcast equipment

  • Retrospective Panel — original team members reflect on a decade of youth‑led broadcasting

  • Creative Hub — photography exhibitions, collaborative artwork and limited‑edition merch from South Wales artists

Entry is free, though workshop spaces are limited and can be booked via Eventbrite.

“The Station’s Success Has Always Belonged to the Young People”

Jason Camilleri, Senior Manager at Platfform and one of the organisation’s founders, reflects on the milestone:

“When we launched Radio Platfform in 2016, the ambition was to create a space where young people could tell their own stories, develop creative skills and feel ownership over something meaningful.

Ten years on, seeing so many young people go on to careers in broadcasting, music, media and the wider creative industries is incredibly rewarding.”

What’s Next for Radio Platfform?

The celebrations don’t end on Saturday. Throughout June, former presenters will return to revive classic shows and share stories from the station’s early days. Later in the year, Radio Platfform will also return to Llais with a dedicated industry talk for young people looking to break into radio and music.

How to join and listen

Entry to the 30 May event is free, although spaces for workshops are limited. Interested participants can book via Eventbrite.

Listeners can tune in live through the Wales Millennium Centre Broadcast Player or explore a decade of content on Mixcloud.
