A Charming Adaptation of a Timeless Classic: Little Women Lights Up Cardiff
Move over dull evenings—The New Theatre Cardiff has delivered a production worthy of applause and admiration. Last night’s performance of Little Women, adapted by Anne-Marie Casey, was a true showcase of talent, capturing the essence, humour, and heart of Louisa May Alcott's cherished story. Under Loveday Ingram’s skilled direction, the audience was transported into a delightful world brought to life with creativity and finesse.
A Cast to Treasure—and One Personal Favourite
The cast was simply splendid, each member embodying their characters with authenticity and warmth. Grace Molony brought fiery independence to Jo, making her utterly captivating, while Jade Kennedy’s Meg was the epitome of elegance and poise. Catherine Chalk’s portrayal of Beth was deeply moving, and Imogen Elliott’s lively and dramatic Amy was an absolute joy to watch.
But the standout for me was Jack Ashton, who won over the audience as Brooke and Bhaer. His charisma and sincerity brought an extra layer of charm to every scene he graced. If I could, I’d happily watch an entire production built solely around his performances!
The Sets: A Visual Masterpiece
Ruari Murchison’s set designs deserve every bit of praise—they were a triumph of ingenuity and subtle artistry, perfectly evoking the 19th-century New England setting. From the welcoming cosiness of the March family’s parlour to the exhilarating outdoors brimming with adventure, each scene felt vivid and alive. Mike Robertson’s lighting design complemented the sets superbly, enhancing the atmosphere with subtlety and elegance.
“This rendition of Little Women was nothing short of extraordinary.”
An All-Round Triumph
Full credit must also go to Mathew Bugg’s evocative composition and sound design, as well as Mike Ashcroft’s dynamic movement direction. These elements enhanced the emotional depth and energy of the production, ensuring it was both moving and thoroughly engaging.
This rendition of Little Women was nothing short of extraordinary. From the stunning performances to the dazzling sets and expert direction, it thoroughly deserves a glowing 5-star rating.
If you weren’t fortunate enough to see it, make sure to catch it next time—it’s an unforgettable theatrical experience!
