Music Monthly - Mays Top Picks
I have some amazing songs for you this week, to really pair with the sun that is finally peaking its head round the corner.
These three songs have been on repeat for me that last few weeks, so I hope you like them as much as I do.
Also, there are some honourable mentions at the end that I would urge you to listen to.
CHROMA – Coalminer’s Granddaughter
This is a recent release from local band CHROMA, part of their newly released album ‘25 Forever’. The energy delivered in this song is impeccable. Really like the high energy continuous drum beat matched with the fuzzy dulcet tones at the start that quickly ramp up to match the drive in the drum beat.
Also, the story being told is done a very hard-hitting way, really empowering Welsh history, memory and captures the a devastating event and the impact that this still has and will have, but done (in my opinion) the best way possible… through music.
If you haven’t heard of CHROMA you need to check out their most recent album. It is phenomenal. They also have plenty of upcoming shows if you wanted to see them live!
Henry Nielsen – Beginning of the End
For those that don’t know I also host a weekly indie radio show, as part of this I get sent a lot of music, but this new single from Henry Nielsen really struck a chord with me. This new release is part of their upcoming album ‘Hollyhocks’, looking forward to listening to the rest of the album.
I had the pleasure to talk with the London based singer songwriter recently about their new release and it was an amazing insight behind the making of this song, this wasn’t just recorded in one studio, in fact quite the opposite Henry travelled to meet friends and other artists to help record different layers of this song, really bringing that orchestral feel.
The song is about an isolated character who is not able to meet people half way, or finding it awkward to connect, and I think once you know that, re-listening to the song really has a deeper impact.
Guilty Party – White Sands
What an amazing band with a buzzing new single, white sands is the definition of an indie banger a real dancefloor filler. I fall head over heels for that fuzzy, punchy guitar especially the solo at around the minute thirty mark, that perfectly times pause with the vocals kicking back in… this part of the song alone is addictive.
I have had this on repeat for the last week, and it gets better every time you listen to it. You can hear the passion and fun behind the song. I also love the meaning, for me anyway, it’s breaking that corporate rut you can get stuck in and as Guilty Party put it best “Gotta get away”.
If you have read one of these before you may have noticed a lack of music video talk on this issue, don’t worry, because Guilty party have a music video for this song and you can tell they loved making it, it is incredibly creative and depicts the song perfectly.
This band are ones to watch, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else they have planned.
I usually do 4 songs on every review, but I wanted to feature some releases from further a field that deserve an honourable mention:
Ode to the glory days - Girl in the year above: a beautiful song, and an amazingly talented band
Run, Rabbit, Run - Sleuth Gang: this is an amazing release from the insane 7-piece band.
Man I need - Penelope Road: this brilliant cover was recorded live at Capricorn Studios.
