Bittersweet Symphony of Scandal: Cruel Intentions Hits Cardiff

full-throttle nostalgia trip that hits harder than a Tamagotchi’s desperate beeping.

Let’s rewind to the era of dial-up tones, butterfly clips, and the unmistakable angst of ‘90s pop classics—because Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical at the Wales Millennium Centre is a full-throttle nostalgia trip that hits harder than a Tamagotchi’s desperate beeping.

From the moment the curtain rises, the show plunges us into the scandalous world of Manhattan’s elite, where step-siblings Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil weave a tangled web of seduction, deception, and deliciously wicked mind games. But here’s the twist: every dramatic twist and turn is underscored by the absolute bangers of the decade. No Scrubs? Check. Genie in a bottle? Oh, you bet. Bittersweet Symphony? Prepare for goosebumps.

Nic Myers as Kathryn was oozing venomous charm with every calculated smirk, while Will Callan’s Sebastian is equal parts brooding and magnetic. And let’s talk about Abbie Budden’s Annette—her transformation from innocent idealist to fierce force of reckoning is nothing short of just. Lucy Carter’s Cecile was hilarious! Not only was she one of the strongest vocalists, she was one of my favourites of the night! The chemistry between the cast crackles like a well-worn VHS tape, and the comedic timing? Sharper than a pair of platform heels.

The production itself embraces a stripped-back aesthetic, letting the powerhouse vocals and razor-sharp dialogue take centre stage. And while the show doesn’t shy away from the provocative themes of the original film, it leans into the satire, making every moment feel fresh, fun, and just the right amount of outrageous.

By the time the final notes of Bittersweet Symphony ring out, you’ll be ready to dust off your old CD collection and relive the glory days. While in my opinion its not the best of the 90’s musical genre, its still a feel good time that will get your foot tapping and fond memories flooding back. Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical isn’t just a show—it’s a time machine, and trust me, you’ll want a return ticket.
