A Tidy Boy brings dark comedy and big questions to Swansea Grand Theatre

A new Welsh theatre production exploring class, masculinity, sexuality and the realities of working with young people is coming to Swansea Grand Theatre this October.
A Tidy Boy, written by Peter Darney and directed by Christian Patterson, will run at The Depot Studio at Swansea Grand Theatre from 16 to 24 October 2026, bringing a darkly comic story about youth work, safeguarding and the difficult gap between knowing the rules and knowing how to help someone.
The play follows Geraint, a 22-year-old newly trained youth worker who returns to his hometown of Skewen, Neath to work at a young offenders' bike repair project. Reserved but confident in his progressive views, Geraint finds himself working alongside Ann, a straight-talking 72-year-old with years of experience, and Silvia, the 63-year-old project manager.
Things become complicated when Kai, a young father from London, joins the project. It quickly becomes apparent that his life is unravelling, leaving the team facing one of the most challenging situations they have encountered.
At the heart of A Tidy Boy is a question about experience versus modern training, and whether knowing the correct procedures is enough when faced with the realities of someone's life.
The comedy drama draws on playwright Peter Darney's own experiences. Before becoming a playwright, Darney worked as a tutor on a young offenders project, where he encountered real-life cases that helped inform the play.
For Darney, bringing the production to Swansea has particular significance.
“My very first theatre trip, when I was 4 years old, was a trip to the Grand, so it is a real honour that I will be able to see my own work, written for the community I am from, produced by a world-class theatre company at home.”
The production is being staged by Grand Ambition, with support from Swansea City Council and Arts Council of Wales.
Director Christian Patterson describes the play as a story that uses comedy to tackle some uncomfortable subjects, including class, masculinity, sexuality and safeguarding.
The cast includes Lynn Hunter, known for The Tuckers, Cucumber and Banana, alongside Eiry Thomas, a BAFTA Cymru award winner who has appeared in The Pact, Keeping Faith and Hinterland. They are joined by Geraint DeCavalho, Kelsey Short and Oliver Jacob Davies.
For Grand Ambition, the production is also the result of a longer relationship with Darney. Company Director Michelle McTernan says the company has been working with the playwright for the past two years, with support from Swansea City Council and Arts Council of Wales.
With its focus firmly rooted in the Welsh community it depicts, A Tidy Boy looks set to offer Swansea audiences a night at the theatre that is funny in places, uncomfortable in others, and ultimately interested in what happens when professional rules meet real human lives.
