As literary communities continue to thrive online through BookTok, Bookstagram and independent publishing, a major new event is set to bring that passion into the real world. Readers & Rebels, a brand-new book convention founded by three authors, will make its debut at ICC Wales on 8 May 2027, creating what promises to be one of the largest celebrations of books and reading ever held in South Wales.
Bringing together more than 100 authors, publishers, creative businesses and bookish vendors, the convention has ambitious plans to establish Wales as a destination for readers from across the UK. The event will offer author signings, panel discussions, exclusive book shopping opportunities and the chance for fans to meet some of their favourite writers in person.
The idea was born from a simple question posed by Welsh author Gem L Preston: why should Welsh readers have to travel elsewhere to experience the kind of large-scale literary conventions increasingly popular across the UK?
Determined to change that, Preston joined forces with fellow authors Rhianne Williams and Marnie L Norton to create an event designed not only to celebrate books, but also to showcase the vibrant literary community already thriving in Wales.
Their timing could hardly be better. Readers are engaging with literature in new ways, with online communities driving bestselling titles and creating global conversations around books. Readers & Rebels aims to capture that energy, transforming it into an in-person experience where friendships can be formed, new authors discovered and stories shared.
The convention's programme will feature a diverse range of writers from across multiple genres, including romance, fantasy, romantasy, horror, thrillers and young adult fiction. Among the names already confirmed are Beth Reekles, author of the international hit The Kissing Booth, alongside thriller writer Bill Wood and fantasy author Andy Darcy Theo.
For Preston, the event marks another significant milestone in an already exciting period. Having recently secured a two-book publishing deal with Penguin Michael Joseph, part of Penguin Random House, she is simultaneously navigating her move into traditional publishing while helping bring one of Wales' most ambitious literary events to life.
However, the convention's focus extends beyond headline authors. Readers & Rebels is committed to championing independent writers, local creatives and small businesses, providing opportunities for Welsh talent to connect with wider audiences and helping to strengthen the country's growing literary landscape.
What sets Readers & Rebels apart is its strong emphasis on community. Designed by authors who understand first-hand the impact these gatherings can have, the event places reader experience at the heart of its planning. Whether visitors arrive as lifelong book lovers, aspiring writers or curious newcomers, organisers want the convention to feel welcoming, inclusive and accessible.
Plans already include a dedicated quiet room, accessible facilities, seating throughout the venue and clear visitor information designed to support attendees with a range of access needs.
The convention also has a charitable focus, with organisers supporting St David's Hospice as part of their commitment to giving back to the communities that have supported them.
While May 2027 may still seem some distance away, Readers & Rebels is already beginning to build momentum through community-focused events. One of the first will be a private screening of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping in Cwmbran on 22 November 2026, hosted by RuPaul's Drag Race UK finalist Catrin Feelings.
As anticipation grows, one thing is clear: Readers & Rebels is more than simply another convention. It is a statement of intent for Wales' literary community, bringing together authors, readers and creative businesses under one roof and proving that world-class book events can thrive on Welsh soil.
For anyone who loves discovering new stories, meeting the people behind them and connecting with fellow readers, Readers & Rebels could become one of the must-attend cultural events of 2027.
