☀️ Summer on Stage: What’s Hot at Wales Millennium Centre This July & August
As the sun casts its golden glow over Cardiff Bay, the Wales Millennium Centre emerges as a beacon of summer culture—offering a vibrant mix of musicals, cabaret, jazz, and drama that speaks to the soul of Welsh creativity. Whether you're a seasoned theatre-goer or a curious newcomer, the Centre’s summer programme is a celebration of storytelling in all its forms.
🎭 July: Colour, Cabaret, and Cult Classics
The month kicks off with the final performances of The Book of Mormon (until 19 July), the irreverent Broadway hit that’s been packing out the Donald Gordon Theatre with its razor-sharp wit and infectious energy.
From 19–20 July, Locomotive for Murder: The Improvised Whodunnit invites audiences to play detective in a cabaret-style mystery where no two shows are alike. It’s followed by A Night At The Musicals (20 July), a glittering one-night-only showcase from Welsh of the West End and The Novello Orchestra.
Musical lovers are in for a treat with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (22–27 July), starring Joe McElderry in a production bursting with colour and nostalgia. Meanwhile, cabaret takes a cheeky turn with Skank Sinatra (25 July) and Charles and Diana: The Reunion Tour (26 July), both offering satirical spins on pop culture and royalty.
For those seeking something more experimental, Deep Beats with Anna Billes (27 July) blends rhythm, movement, and immersive soundscapes. And if you dare, Ghost Stories (29 July–2 August) promises spine-tingling suspense in a theatrical experience that’s not for the faint-hearted.
🎶 August: Jazz, Icons, and Welsh Legends
August opens with a swing as Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club: The Ronnie Scott’s Story (3 August) pays tribute to the legendary Soho venue. Then, on 7 August, the Transatlantic Ensemble reimagines Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours in a live performance that’s equal parts nostalgic and electric.
Queen of the Night (8 August) celebrates the voice and legacy of Whitney Houston, while The Last Laugh (12–16 August), a new play by Paul Hendy, offers a poignant glimpse behind the curtain of comedy.
The season culminates with Nye (22–30 August), starring Michael Sheen as Aneurin Bevan in a powerful National Theatre co-production. It’s a timely and moving tribute to the founder of the NHS—one that resonates deeply with Welsh audiences and beyond.
